Chickens That Lay Dark Brown Eggs
A dark brown egg is a normal brown egg with an extra bloom of pigment laid on late in the shell's formation. Only a handful of breeds lay one dark enough to stop you at the carton, and the depth fades a little across a long laying season — the first eggs of a pullet's year are the darkest she will ever lay.
These 10 breeds carry the trait. Marans (the French chocolate-egg breed), Welsummer (the Kellogg's-rooster bird, terracotta with speckles) and Barnevelder are the ones to start with; Penedesenca and Langshan push darker still but are harder to source. Cross any of them onto a blue layer and you get olive — the reason olive eggers exist.
