A hen never crows — that is the rooster, and most suburbs ban him — but breeds do differ in how much they chatter, and a flighty breed that hates a run will pace and complain in a way the neighbours hear. The pick for a small yard is a quiet breed that genuinely tolerates confinement.

Australorp, Orpington, Brahma, Cochin and the Sussex family are the classic suburban hens: heavy, calm, happy in a run, and among the steadiest layers in the book. Skip the Mediterranean layers (Leghorn, Ancona, Andalusian) for a tight lot — they lay superbly but are loud and want to range.
