A magnolia scaled for a real yard — sweetbay opens lemon-scented creamy cups for weeks through early summer, not one overwhelming flush but a long, fragrant conversation. Its leaves flash silver undersides in every breeze, and in the South it holds them all winter.
Best of all, it wants the spot no other tree will take — that soggy low corner where water lingers. A swamp-margin native, it hosts swallowtails, feeds birds with red fall seeds, and stays graceful at small-yard scale. Give the wet spot a tree worth smelling.
