Rabbiteye Blueberry Varieties: the Southern Table
Rabbiteye is the blueberry that belongs in the Southeast. It is a different species from the highbush of the North, native to Georgia, Alabama and Florida, and it carries the traits that climate demands: it shrugs off summer heat and drought, tolerates soil that is not quite as acid as highbush insists on, lives for decades, and grows into a ten-foot shrub that yields by the gallon. The trade is that it ripens later, in June and July rather than May, and the berries are tart until they have been fully blue for several days.
The rule that decides the harvest is in the self-fertile column: every one of these 9 reads No. Rabbiteyes are self-unfruitful, so a single bush flowers and sets almost nothing; plant two different rabbiteye varieties with overlapping bloom, and Tifblue with Powderblue or Climax with Premier are the classic pairs. Most of the newer names, Titan, Vernon, Ochlockonee and Alapaha, are University of Georgia releases bred for larger fruit or a later bloom that dodges frost. Sorted by chill requirement; Brightwell at about 400 hours reaches furthest into Florida.

| Variety | Chill hrs | Ripens | Zones | Self-fertile | Notes | Where to buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brightwell | 350–400 | Mid-season rabbiteye | 7-9 | No | medium to large, sweet — One of the lowest-chill rabbiteyes at roughly 350-400 hours, which extends rabbiteye culture into milder winters than Tifblue or Powderblue will tolerate.Prone to over-cropping, so prune for renewal, and the fruit may split in wet weather near harvest. | Browse growers |
| Climax | 400–450 | Early rabbiteye | 7-9 | No | small to medium, concentrated ripeningSets and ripens its whole crop in a tight window, which suits a grower who wants one or two big pickings rather than a long dribble. It is an early bloomer, and the newer UGA rabbiteyes bred around it - Vernon ripens before it, Alapaha flowers 7-10 days after it - are offered as alternatives where spring freezes are a risk. Chill is 400-450 hours per Mississippi State; Clemson lists it as 450. | Browse growers |
| Alapaha | 450–500 | Early rabbiteye | 7-9 | No | medium, firm — A UGA release that blooms later than Climax while still ripening early,so it dodges spring freeze damage that costs early rabbiteyes their crop. Pair with Vernon, whose bloom overlaps it. | Browse growers |
| Premier | 500–550 | June to early July (early rabbiteye) | 7-9 | No | large, sweet, high-quality berriesA dependable early rabbiteye for the Southeast, but like all rabbiteyes it is self-sterile and must be cross-pollinated by a second variety. | Browse growers |
| Titan | 500–550 | Early rabbiteye | 7-9 | No | very large, quarter-sized berriesA UGA release grown for berry size - among the largest rabbiteye fruit available. The fruit may crack in wet conditions near harvest, so it rewards a site with good air movement. | Browse growers |
| Vernon | 450–550 | Early rabbiteye | 7-9 | No | large, excellent firmness — Ripens ahead of Climax with noticeably larger, firmer fruit and is widely recommended as the Climax replacement.Chill estimates differ by source, Clemson puts it near 450 hours and Mississippi State at 500-550, so the range here is deliberately wide. | Browse growers |
| Powderblue | 550–650 | July into August (late rabbiteye) | 6-9 | No | firm, sweet, powdery-blue skin, ships well — A hardy, productive late rabbiteye that pairs naturally with Tifblue; requires a second variety to fruit. | Browse growers |
| Ochlockonee | 650–700 | Late rabbiteye | 7-9 | No | larger and firmer than TifblueA late, very productive rabbiteye with bigger fruit than Tifblue, useful for stretching a Southeastern harvest deep into summer. At 650-700 hours it is the highest-chill rabbiteye in common use, so it will not perform in the warmest winters. | Browse growers |
| Tifblue | 600–700 | July (mid to late rabbiteye) | 7-9 | No | firm, sweet when fully ripe, excellent keeperThe benchmark rabbiteye for the Southeast: extremely productive and long-lived, but self-sterile and must have a second rabbiteye for pollination. | Browse growers |
