5 Things for the Home Apothecary Shelf

Elderberry syrup, calendula salve, dried tea blends - the herbs come from the garden, but the shelf runs on jars, cloth and a scale.

Amber dropper bottles

Tinctures live and die by light

Amber Dropper Bottles, 2 oz (48)

The pick

Amber Dropper Bottles, 2 oz (48)

$34.99 on Amazon

Tinctures and infused oils keep for years in amber glass and degrade in months in clear - the same light protection the herb jars need, plus a dropper, because tincture doses are counted in drops and pouring from a jam jar is how the counter gets sticky and the dose gets vague.

Label with contents AND date made; two-year-old tincture is fine, mystery tincture is not.

Grade-90 cheesecloth

The cheap stuff is a sieve, not a filter

Grade-90 Cheesecloth, Precut

Grade-90 Cheesecloth, Precut

$5.96 on Amazon

The loose-weave cheesecloth at the grocery lets half the plant material through and falls apart wrung out. Grade 90 is the tight professional weave: it strains a tincture clear, wrings an oil infusion hard enough to get the last third out, washes, and comes back for years of batches.

Wring harder than feels polite - the strongest fraction is in the last squeeze.

A small funnel set

Two-ounce bottles have half-inch mouths

Stainless Funnel Set

Stainless Funnel Set

$6.39 on Amazon

Everything on this shelf eventually pours from something wide into something narrow, and elderberry syrup poured freehand into a dropper bottle stains the ceiling of whoever lives below. A nesting set of small stainless funnels makes every transfer boring, which is the goal.

Stainless, not plastic - infused oils leave a film plastic never gives back.

A 0.1-gram scale

Recipes by weight actually repeat

Digital Scale, 3000 g x 0.1 g

Digital Scale, 3000 g x 0.1 g

$9.99 on Amazon

Herbal recipes worth following are written in grams, because a 'handful' of fluffy dried calendula and a handful of dense root differ by five-fold. A pocket scale reading to a tenth of a gram makes a salve that worked repeatable - and beeswax ratios are unforgiving enough to need it.

Weigh the beeswax especially: two grams either way is the difference between balm and brick.

Beeswax pellets

The difference between an oil and a salve

Beeswax Pellets, 1 lb

The pick

Beeswax Pellets, 1 lb

$13.99 on Amazon

A salve is an infused oil that beeswax made solid - roughly one part wax to four or five of oil, adjusted for the season since a July salve wants to be firmer than a January one. Pellets melt in minutes where a block of comb wax wants a hacksaw. One pound makes a couple dozen tins.

Test one spoonful on a cold plate before pouring the batch - it sets in a minute and tells you.
