Self-Fertile Sweet Cherry Varieties
Sweet cherries are the most partner-dependent of all common fruit trees — classic varieties like Bing aren't just self-sterile, they're incompatible with whole groups of other cherries that share their pollen genetics. Planting them right means matching pollination groups like a seating chart. Or you skip the chart entirely: since Stella (the first self-fertile sweet cherry, 1968), breeders have produced a small set that crops alone.
These are those 5: Stella, Lapins, Sweetheart, and Cornell's BlackGold and WhiteGold — the latter two hardier (to zone 4) and notably crack-resistant, which matters because rain near harvest splits sweet cherries overnight. Every one of these also works as a universal pollen donor for other sweet cherries, so it's the smartest FIRST cherry even if you plan an orchard.
